Underfloor heating
in an extension

An extension is the easiest time to fit wet underfloor heating, because the floor is being built anyway.

We start by working out the heat loss for the extension room by room, so the pipe spacing and the number of loops match what each space needs. That depends on the insulation, so we ask your builder or architect what is going under the screed and how thick it will be.

The pipes go down on the insulation once the walls are up and before the screed, so we agree the date with your builder well ahead. If there is a gas hob going into the new kitchen, we bury the gas pipe below the celotex and any ufh pipes at the same stage.

Before any screed goes down we pressure test every loop, so a damaged pipe shows up while it can still be put right.

The manifold goes somewhere you can get to, usually a utility or understairs cupboard, with a thermostat for each zone, and then we connect it to your boiler. Most modern boilers can run an extension's underfloor heating, but if the extension adds a lot of heat demand or another bathroom, we check the boiler and the hot water can keep up before we quote and tell you if they cannot.

Then on a winter morning you walk across the new kitchen floor barefoot, with warm feet on the tiles.

It works on a whole house too. In Gerrards Cross we fitted underfloor heating on all three floors of a four-bedroom, three-bathroom house, with two zones on the ground floor around the open-plan kitchen, four on the first floor and one on the top floor, all run from a Vaillant system boiler with a Megaflo cylinder.
